James Clar: Presented by Jane Lombard Gallery at UNTITLEDDecember 4-8, 2019Jane Lombard Gallery is presenting a solo booth of new work by visual artist James Clar, at UNTITLED at Booth B12. Featuring new sculpture and installation inspired by the movement, aesthetics, and our ecological relationships with water, Clar engages with liquids as a cosmic force by using LED lights and filters to create complex and intimate structures.
This meditation on water and its irreplaceable properties brings to the forefront climate change as a cultural zeitgeist. In Clar’s practice, there is much examination of natural and cultural phenomena and the psychological and sociological impact of these occurrences. In this series, he focuses on natural beauty and the mesmerizing interactions between water and light; creating artificial replicas of nature's most beautiful moments. Clar enacts stillness in a rapidly moving world.
To foster education and innovation in the areas of climate change, the artist and gallery have decided to donate a percentage of sales to Ocean Conservancy, an environmental charity. https://oceanconservancy.org/
Additionally, James Clar’s, Gravitational Collapse, will be on view in UNTITLED’s Special Projects section. The LED sculpture represents an impossible geometric form of a collapsing star.
The artist will be available for interviews on site.
Ralph Ziman: Special Projects at PULSE Art FairDecember 5 - 8, 2019
South African artist, Ralph Ziman, has been selected as a highlighted special project for PULSE Art Fair (4601 Collins Avenue). Ziman will be presenting SPOEK-1, a restored and reclaimed 11-ton decommissioned, apartheid-era Casspir vehicle adorned with 70 million of brightly-colored glass beads in traditional patterns.
Ziman is known for work that interrogates human rights issues such as apartheid, the over-militarization of police, and state violence. Casspirs are armored, all-terrain vehicles developed in South Africa in the 1970s. They were used extensively by the South African Police, as well as the South African Defense Force, against civilians in urban township areas from the late ‘70s through early ‘90s during the apartheid. SPOEK 1 is restored and refitted and transformed into a work of art that subverts narratives of violence and oppression, and reclaims the vehicle as a symbol of beauty and humanity.
SPOEK-1 will be installed at the front of PULSE Art Fair. The artist will be available for interviews on site.
