Full-Scale Jean Prouvé House Highlights Sotheby’s Private Sales Exhibition of Fine Art & Design This May in New York 140+ WORKS ON VIEW By Titans of the 19th & 20th Centuries, Together Valued in Excess of $150 Million

NEW YORK, 5 May 2018 – Coinciding with our marquee May auctions of Impressionist & Modern and Contemporary Art, as well as the spring seasons of TEFAF and Frieze art fairs, Sotheby’s is pleased to present an exhibition of fine art and design spanning the 19th and 20th centuries in our New York galleries, with all works available for private sale. The exhibition is now open to the public, and will remain on view through 20 May.

More than 140 works by artists and designers including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell and Charlotte Perriand are on view in our 5th floor galleries, together valued in excess of $150 million. Works available privately include a variety of text works by Ed Ruscha, paintings by Yayoi Kusama featuring her iconic Infinity Net and Pumpkin imagery, stabiles by Alexander Calder and works on paper by Pablo Picasso. The show also will include highlights from our Sotheby’s May auctions of Important Design, as well as pieces from our dedicated auction of art & design from the homes of Delphine and Reed Krakoff.

In collaboration with Galerie Patrick Seguin, the exhibition has been staged in and around a full-scale example of Jean Prouvé’s Maison Démountable – one of the French architect and designer’s prefabricated houses, which is itself on offer for private sale. Originally developed in the 1940s as emergency housing for bomb-devastated villages in postwar France, the house measures over 20 x 30 ft and is made entirely of wood and metal.

David Schrader, Global Head of Private Sales, Fine Art Division, commented: “It’s been a particular privilege to work with Patrick Seguin on bringing the Prouvé house to our New York galleries this spring, as the global art world gathers in New York. We’ve brought Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary artists together under one roof – quite literally – with masters of design like Jean Royere and Le Corbusier, and we’re excited to introduce this new exhibition to collectors throughout May.”
