NEW YORK, 21 September 2020 – Sotheby’s and Planned Parenthood of Greater New York (PPGNY) are pleased to present Choice Works 2020 – an online auction of 28 artworks donated by leading contemporary artists, with proceeds to benefit PPGNY. Furthering the online sale’s charitable mission, five additional works will offered in our live Contemporary Curated auction on 2 October in New York.

Following the Choice Works live auction in 2015 at Sotheby’s, Choice Works 2020 aims to raise critical funds needed for PPGNY to provide for patients in this unprecedented time of need. PPGNY is one of the largest Planned Parenthood affiliates, serving 200,000 patients per year in over 25 health centers across New York State.

Open for bidding from 21 September through 5 October, the online sale features works by artists such as: Marina Adams, Rita Ackermann, Matthew Barney, Mel Bochner, Katherine Bradford, Cecily Brown, Judy Chicago, Dan Colen and Nate Lowman, Sarah Crowner, Carroll Dunham, Ellen Gallagher, Sam Gilliam, Cameron Jamie, Jasper Johns, Rashid Johnson, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Sol Lewitt, Marilyn Minter, Sarah Morris, James Nares, Elizabeth Peyton, Raymond Pettibon, Richard Prince, Ed Ruscha, Dana Schutz, Laurie Simmons, Vaughn Spann, Pat Steir, Stanley Whitney, Robert Wilson, and Terry Winters.

The sale will launch with a virtual event on 21 September honoring the 25th anniversary of fine art publisher, Two Palms, and its founders David and Evelyn Lasry. Chaired by Cecily Brown, Amy Sherald, and Chairmen of Sotheby’s Fine Art Division Amy Cappellazzo and Lisa Dennison, the event will feature a dance party with Questlove, as well as guest appearances by Planned Parenthood supporters including Sarah Silverman and Alan Cumming, among others. In addition, CFDA award-winning designer Narciso Rodriguez has teamed up with artist Cindy Sherman to release two limited edition t-shirts for the event, with 100% of the proceeds benefitting PPGNY. The shirts, one black and one white, each feature previously unseen vintage artworks created by Sherman, and will be available exclusively to ticket purchasers.

Charlotte Van Dercook, Head of Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated auctions in New York, said: “We are honored to work alongside Planned Parenthood of Greater New York to organize this sensational charitable sale, with proceeds benefitting the organization’s ability to continue to provide vital services to New Yorkers in need. The outstanding works presented in the Choice Works sale, as well as in our Contemporary Curated auction, are not only a testament to the tremendous generosity of the artists themselves, but also to their resounding support of PPGNY and its mission. We look forward to presenting this terrific group in our sales beginning next week in New York.”

Keith Corso, Chief Development Officer of PPGNY, adds: “Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is thrilled to partner with the incredible Two Palms team for Choice Works 2020, a one-of-a-kind virtual celebration of art, music, and fashion. These dynamic artists are joining their creative powers to ensure that New Yorkers who rely on PPGNY can access quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care services like birth control, cancer screenings, and STD testing and treatment, and that all young people have the information and tools they need to make healthy, informed decisions. During these challenging times, there's one thing we know for sure - people need more health care, not less. The impact of this stellar event and the artists' time, talent, and commitment to our mission will extend well beyond this celebration.”

In celebration of the benefit auction, Two Palms founders Evelyn and David Lasry created a group of unique artworks from some of their key collaborators. Included in this group are: Elizabeth Peyton’s first-ever monotype created with hand painting on handmade paper, and depicting Alexandra Ocasio Cortez – a work that seems destined to become an iconic image in her archive; a complete set of Sol Lewitt’s 36 relief prints, created in 1996 and long sold out, from the Two Palms archive; a large abstract Stanley Whitney monotype in vibrant watercolor; a Carroll Dunham monotype in watercolor and pencil; a Mel Bochner language-based monoprint with engraving and embossment; a highly-coveted Jeff Koons Gazing Ball series archival pigment print with glass; a Marina Adams three-part monoprint in oil; and a Dana Schutz monotype with hand painting in gouache.
