Space Copenhagen and Benchmark Launch Two new sofas at 100% Design for London Design Festival 2018September 2018: To coincide with the London Design Festival, Space Copenhagen and Benchmark will unveil two new designs at 100% Design. The new additions include a new sofa, as part of the Gleda Collection and a second piece – the Muse Sofa. As with Space Copenhagen’s previous collection for Benchmark, the new pieces combine the duo’s sophisticated aesthetic with Benchmark’s deep-rooted values in craftsmanship.Inspired by Donald Judd’s radical and minimalist universe, the new Muse Sofa features natural timber combined with a feather topped cushions and tactile fabrics and leathers, giving it a cosy and laid back aesthetic.
Space Copenhagen has played with proportions and softer details to meet new demands in both domestic and hospitality environments. The design can be adapted into L shapes, U shapes and bespoke sizes to suit every space. In addition, the Muse can be designed with one or two side tables. The flexibility of this design lends itself to accommodate residential and commercial spaces such as office reception areas and hotel lobbies.
Working closely with Benchmark, Space Copenhagen has created a simple design, highlighting the beauty of the materials and the characteristic grain of the oak.
Peter Bundgaard Rützou and Signe Bindslev Henriksen comment: “In combination with the wood, the soft upholstery is of great importance to the overall look and feel - and together with Benchmark we have put great attention into the textures and structure of the seat as well as refining the seams and edges”
“In many modern, curated environments - with a lot of different typologies of furniture, materials and details, - we believe that some furniture pieces need to be more of a more calm and silent nature. They serve the purpose of unifying the atmosphere in a space – and help the other elements to stand out more clearly. Our hope is that the Muse sofa is one of those strong pieces.”
The Muse Sofa is available in both oak and ash with a choice of subtle toned finishes with a choice of textile or leather upholstery.
The Gleda Collection first launched in 2017, founded upon a mutual commitment to craftsmanship and a curiosity to develop a new interpretation of the classic spindle chair. New additions were also announced at Clerkenwell Design Week earlier this year. The new Gleda Sofa is an extension of this range that incorporates Space Copenhagen’s signature use of natural materials, subdued colours and meticulous craft. It has been designed with or without arms in order to make it a piece that fits with flexibility into a variety of spaces.
The Spindle backed Gleda Sofa is made in solid oak with solid brass details. The sofa is available in three finishes – whited oil, aged oak and ebonised, the latter of which is created using a traditional technique of combining iron oxide and vinegar to set off a reaction that produces a matt black finish with accentuated grain patterns.
Sean Sutcliffe, Co-Founder of Benchmark, comments:“At the core of our work together with Space Copenhagen lies a deep rooted belief in the value of making furniture the best it can be made. It’s a shared belief in the value of craft and making things that will last - both aesthetically and physically. We share a trust in natural materials – wood, wool and leather – and both Muse and Gleda clearly express this joint belief.”
