Join us for the book launch of ROY LICHTENSTEIN: THE LOADED BRUSH, newly published on the occasion of our eponymous exhibition at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac Salzburg. The evening will begin with a screening of the short film ROY LICHTENSTEIN: REFLECTIONS to provide further insight into Roy Lichtenstein’s œuvre and working methods during the 1980s.

The comprehensive catalogue features an essay by Professor Siegfried Gohr, richly illustrated with the exhibited paintings, sculptures, collages and drawings, as well as archival photographs dating from the 1980s. As director of the Josef Haubrich Kunsthalle, Cologne, Siegfried Gohr hosted the celebrated Roy Lichtenstein 1970-1980 retrospective in 1982 and went on to become director of the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, which houses the most comprehensive collection of Pop Art in Europe. In his profound essay, Siegfried Gohr explores the brushstroke as motif and concept throughout Roy Lichenstein’s œuvre, while focusing specifically on that seminal decade. By juxtaposing Lichtenstein’s works with paintings by the great masters of art history, Gohr provides new insights and anchors the brushstroke within the context of German Expressionism and Neo-expressionism.

Premiered in 1993 and directed by Edgar B. Howard and Seth Schneidman, ROY LICHTENSTEIN: REFLECTIONS documents the artist’s work, his artistic process and his sources of inspiration, focusing on Lichtenstein’s Large-Scale Murals, Reflections and Interior Series. The film further features leading experts on modern art, such as Diane Waldman of the Guggenheim Museum; Kirk Varnedoe of The Museum of Modern Art; Robert Rosenblum, Professor of Fine Arts at New York University and legendary gallerist Leo Castelli, who famously represented Roy Lichtenstein. The artist himself was filmed in his studios in New York City and Southampton, Long Island, as well as on location in Los Angeles and Rome.
